I led the end-to-end design process of the Copilot experience for Viva Engage, Microsoft's internal social platform. We navigated a lot of ambiguity and difficult questions—like how to educate users in writing effective prompts and where to surface the AI in a way that feels contextual, not intrusive. It came down to scrappy ideas, hands-on testing, and a talented, nimble team to pull it all together.

How do we personalize Copilot's entry point for the individual? This project, which I conceptualized and shipped, aims to answer that question. By starting with AI-generated snapshots of cross-organizational activity, users can kickstart a conversation with Copilot based on personalized updates.

I had the honor of guest lecturing for CS1300 (Interaction Design), a course at Brown University that sparked my own interest in interaction design as a baby undergrad! As a class, we discussed designing for LLMs, AI ethical principles, and malleable software.

Before I was in big tech full-time, I helped several startups build their design systems, philosophies, and infrastructure from the ground up. One such company was Complete, which endeavors to demystify compensation. I led 0 to 1 product design and strategy, culminating in $4M in seed funding.

As a freelance product designer with Friendly Studio, one of my clients was Flo Recruit. I worked on product thinking and interactive prototypes for their legal recruitment tool, endeavoring to untangle the recruiting process at the systemic level.

Another of my clients with Friendly was BallerTV, a youth athletics streaming platform. I co-led a total refresh of the company's brand and design system, helping form cohesive identity and clear infrastructure.

In a past life, I also worked at a design agency. As a junior product designer at Instrument, I was tasked with developing visual assets and interstitials for a heart rate monitoring feature for Nike Run Club, an app dedicated to coaching runners of all levels.

About

Charisa Wang is a product designer based in sunny Los Angeles. She graduated from Brown, where she stitched together her own major in Human-Centered Design. Currently at Microsoft, she works on Copilot and other AI-powered features. She has a penchant for designing tools that facilitate community, creativity, and/or collaboration, and enjoys wrangling problems that deal with cognition and perception.

Offline, you can catch her throwing clay, trying to perfect her chocolate chip cookie recipe, or scoping out the top of a mountain. One of these days she’ll open a used bookstore, but in the meantime will settle for visiting as many existing ones as she can.
